Sfumato: A Fusion of Art and Functionality

Revolutionizing Space with a Dynamic, Modular Shelving System

With a design that is both stable and hard at the bottom, yet blurred and soft on top, Sfumato is a visually compelling reflection of a metropolis. The dynamic structure, with various heights, depths, and transparencies, creates compartments with different atmospheres, accommodating a variety of everyday objects. The design is a scaled and stylized interpretation of contemporary indoor spaces, offering a fresh perspective on interior design.

What sets Sfumato apart is its dynamic outline that evokes the skyline of an urban landscape – spacious and massive at the bottom, broken and fragmented at the top, with a continuous horizontal base. Different configurations and dimensions are realized through the simple combining of the modules. It is a modular, stand-alone or wall shelf system for small items, those you want to exhibit or hide, either with a play of shadows or closed doors.

The design was realized using body, shelves, partitions, and front panels made of MDF, matt lacquered. The Sfumato shelving system is available in three module sizes, providing versatility and adaptability to various spaces. The design is a result of a collaborative effort by a team of designers including Nedim Mutevelić, Kenan Vatrenjak, Asmir Mutevelić, Vedad Islambegović, and Ibrica Jašarević.

Sfumato interacts with walls or empty space behind by not having a straight top line but having a dynamic appearance. The project started at the beginning of 2018 in Sarajevo (B&H) and Djakovo (Croatia), and was produced in Djakovo (Croatia) during 2018. It has been showcased at various fairs and exhibitions, and was awarded the Platinum A' Furniture Design Award in 2020.

The main challenge in designing Sfumato was to find a visual language for a modular system that would make a seamless whole, in any case of composition of three or more elements. Despite the challenges, the design team was successful in creating a unique and innovative shelving system that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

The design is a testament to the innovative and creative spirit of Nedim Mutevelic - Filter, and is a worthy recipient of the prestigious Platinum A' Furniture Design Award.
